Art and Craft

It’s already January again so Happy (and above all: HEALTHY) New Year to all of you!!!
A good friend of mine is setting up a few art classes for beginners. Here is an overview of what she wants to do. If you feel challenged, don’t hesitate to contact me, I’ll be glad to forward any messages to my dear friend Betty. Betty has a disability as well, but that does not keep her from pursuing her dreams, helping people develop their natural talent for painting, drawing, knitting, and more. Here is what she has in mind:

Pastel Painting

If you love the color, like to have immediate results, and don’t mind a bit of dust, you will enjoy soft pastels. This class will cover the ABC’s of soft pastels, from the various pastels available, what kinds of surfaces you can use, how to begin a work, how to use color, value patterns, underpainting, mixed media, fixatives, framing and protecting the work. No painting experience is necessary but some knowledge of drawing is required. Approximate cost of materials needed is $100, but the longevity of the supplies justifies the cost. A supply list will be provided when registering. Limit 15 students.

Oil Painting

This class is for the beginner or intermediate level student. Drawing skills are not required. This is an activity class where participants will be painting. Approximate cost of materials needed is $100, but the longevity of the supplies will justify the cost. A supply list is provided upon registration. Limit 15 students as well.

Drawing: Beginner

Students will learn free-hand drawing by using shapes and forms as well as perspective and proportion. Techniques and concepts will be covered using graphite pencils, pen and ink, charcoal and watercolor washes. This can be used to enhance work in other mediums. Approximate cost of supplies is $15. A supply list will be provided the first night of classes. Partakers will need to bring no. 2 pencils. Special attention will be for drawing concept car designs.

Watercolor: Beginner

This class will be for those students who have never painted or who need a review of the basics of transparent watercolor, brush techniques, composition, and color theory. Approximate cost of supplies will be around $100. A list of required supplies will be provided at the first class. Limit 12 students. Who knows what hidden talents you have? You might even discover that a professional career as an artist will be your best track towards a rewarding future! But then, you’ll have to learn to think like an entrepreneur who needs s to sell his or her works of art.

Portrait Painting: Beginner

Have you ever wanted to sketch or paint portraits? This is your chance. This class will begin with the basic techniques of sketching people. Betty will provide the beginning reference materials. You will then progress to photographs and finally to a live model. Each class will start with a brief demonstration and lecture, followed by lots of individual help with your work. Getting a “likeness”, measuring, flattering the subject and other techniques will be taught. Betty is a professional portrait painter. Approximate cost of supplies is $150. A supply list will be provided at the first class.

Punch Your Art Out

In this class, you will learn everything from basic to advanced design with punch shapes. Punch art is not only an excellent way to embellish your scrapbook, but it is a great way to embellish and design your own cards, stationery, books for your children and other memorabilia. This course will cover everything from design, maintenance, and development of punches and punch art. Punches will be provided but you are welcomed to bring your own. Limit 20 students.

Crochet

Beginners will learn to slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet and reading patterns. Bring an “H” crochet hook and a skein of light-colored yarn to the first night of class. Extra work outside of class will be needed.

Knitting

This is a course designed for the beginner and those with a little experience. We will cover casting on, knit and purl stitches, casting off, and cable stitches. We will also cover reading patterns, blocking and finishing work. Bring two size 9 knitting needles and a skein of worsted weight yarn to the first night of class.

Please let me know when you’re interested in one of these courses and I’ll ask Betty to contact you, so be sure to include your name, address, and phone number.
